This is a
picture of one
of the
hummingbirds
that come into
our yard during
the summer. They
are very hard to
get a good
picture of, but
I keep trying. They are very dependable
visitors to the feeders. In our area they come back in the spring around the first of April and I try to have the feeders up by 1 April. If you don't have the feeder up when they come back they will hover around the
place where it was hanging the summer before. To me that is proof that the same birds come back to the same place.
They will hang around until about the middle of September before they head off back down south. For 2001 the last hummer I saw was on 22 September. If you would like to feed
the hummers it is very simple. All you need to do is buy a hummingbird feeder and fill it with a sugar water solution. The sugar water is 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. For our three feeders I
make it up as
4 cups water and
1 cup sugar. This makes enough solution to last a couple days and that is about as long as you should leave the feeders up between washings. The hummers are a
lot of fun to watch and will get used to you being around the feeders if you are there regularly. For example, I used to have one on the front porch and spent a lot of time sitting on the porch in
the evening reading. The hummers would go to the feeder to feed, and then they would drop down to check me out. They will also drop down to the windows to check out what is going on
inside the house, like to watch your pets or yourself.
